The composition ci

The composition ci is a special poetic form in the ancient times of China. At first it could be sung to the beat of music, and was composed according to musical notations. For the composition of ci there are varied melodies, whose names originally had a lot of connection with the subject of each ci poem, but later that link disappeared. This poetic composition flourished in the Song Dynasty and endures to this day. Since the Song and Yuan Dynasties, the people tend to put Tang Dynasty poetry, Song’s ci and Yuan’s qu on the same plane. There are more or less 20,000 poems ci transmitted from the Song Dynasty to the present, and about 1500 composers are known in history by name in this poetic way, among whom three or four hundred have been successful in exerting some influence to posterity. More than 30 composers deserve to be called „Great teachers“ or „eminent poets.“
